The new TDI'a are DFP so be CAREFUL, These filters I hear get logged up very quickly unless you take the car for long runs. (Wife only does the school run so I was told to avoid the DFPs...therefore TDI out of the question for me although the diesel did appeal to me)
The Petrol is supposed to be as efficient (hope so!) but again be CAREFUL...it is recommended you use Super-unleaded NOT standard unleaded if you are to get the best consumption.....that is 5p/litre more than unleaded
I'm currently thinking of buying a new Skoda Octavia and after some research I think that the best option for me will be the 1.4 TSI with the DSG gearbox.
I found a link to the Octavia Instruction manual and it recommends that the octane rating for 1.4 TSI is 95RON (see http://new.skoda-auto.com/com/model/...mentation.aspx
and follow the links on the left to 'Operating Instructions -> General Maintenance -> Fuel -> Petrol - Grades of petrol')
On this page it states :
Engines which need unleaded premium petrol 95 RON can also be run on unleaded regular petrol 91 RON. This does, however, result in a slight loss in performance.
If, in an emergency, the only fuel available is one which has a lower octane number than that required by the engine then only drive at medium engine speeds and lower engine loadings.
You can make unlimited use of fuel which has a higher octane number than that required by the engine. There will, however, be no advantages gained by this in terms of engine performance and fuel consumption!
According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating) :
In the
United Kingdom, '
regular' petrol has an octane rating of 95 RON, with 97 RON fuel being widely available as the
Super Unleaded.
Tesco and
Shell both offer 99 RON fuel.
BP is currently trialling the public selling of the super-high
octane petrol BP Ultimate Unleaded 102, which as the name suggests, has an octane rating of 102 RON. Although BP Ultimate Unleaded (with an octane rating of RON 97) and BP Ultimate Diesel are both widely available throughout the UK, BP Ultimate Unleaded 102 is (as of October 2007) only available throughout the UK in 10 filling stations, and is priced at about two and half times more than their 97 RON fuel.
There appears then to be some conflicting advice between Skoda and other members of the VAG group. However you may be paying unnecessarily more for a higher grade of petrol. Although Wikipedia may also be incorrect regarding the Octane rating of 'regular' petrol (I haven't checked at my local petrol station yet).
