Picked up a price list 5/10/07 the new engine was in there, with the 7 speed DSG box. Late Dec or early Jan cars expected for a test drive, that has been and gone and no cars yet. New price list out 1/1/08 cars have gone up in price now expected in April.

Have written to Volkswagen 30/1/08 not had the courtesy of a reply if this is how they treat potential customers they should realize there are other excellent makes out there.

Anyone know the reason for the delay dealers have no idea, I would like the DSG box and Golf size automatics are few and far between Mazda 3 1.6 petrol auto driven that the other day, Volvo V50 1.6 petrol but only manual.

Come on VW what is going on, either demand in Europe is so great you cannot make right hand drives yet, or problems with the 1.4 Turbo engine, if someone from VW reads this and it looks like you have read this before, it was in my unreplied to letter.

Thank you for the welcomes but that does not answer my original question.

Still I have found out what has happened and I was not wrong, called at the dealers this morning. It turns out VW are having trouble with the new engine, valve problems I understand and production has been stopped thus causing a huge backlog of orders 7000 in Britain alone.

The old 1.6fsi engine has been reintroduced and the 1.4Tsi will be sometime in the future.

So MIGHTY VOLKSWAGEN come clean, and the dealer said you should have replied to my letter, even bull**** would have been better than nothing.

    welcome to the site.

If you speak to them again, would you ask if the 7 speed box will be fitted to anything else please preferably the 2.0 tdi?

I would imagine the 7 speed DSG box will eventually totally replace the 6 speed. The six speed I understand runs in oil and the new 7 speed runs dry thus more efficient. In the 1.4Tsi the DSG does more to the gallon than the manual, not a lot but more.

The other Golf I was interested was the 1.9Tdi and I would have bought one but I found the cambelt need changing every 60,000 miles or 4 years which ever comes sooner at a cost of approx £350 to 400 at todays prices.

The 1.4 petrol is a chain drive plus is approx £1000 cheaper than the diesel so I could spend that on the DSG box, that was my plan from October last year until yesterday.

I called on my way home from the VW dealers at Skoda had a test drive in an Octavia 1.9Tdi manual more chance of winning the lottery than finding a 1.9Tdi with a DSG box to drive, nice tempted even if it's the six speed.

I was talking to the sales women about petrol ver diesel because Skoda have the 1.8Tsi engine but it costs a bit more than the 1.9Tdi more road tax and less mpg. I then mentioned the cambelt on the diesel needing changing, every 60,000 she said or 4 years I said, she went to check with the service manager, your are right she said.
I thought I have done my homework.

    Now what to do?

I have gone for the 14.TSI (ps 122) with 7 speed DSG. Why? cos the Mrs only drives autos....the other option was the 2.0TDI (140PS)...110PS does not have an auto.

The new TDI'a are DFP so be CAREFUL, These filters I hear get logged up very quickly unless you take the car for long runs. (Wife only does the school run so I was told to avoid the DFPs...therefore TDI out of the question for me although the diesel did appeal to me)

The Petrol is supposed to be as efficient (hope so!) but again be CAREFUL...it is recommended you use Super-unleaded NOT standard unleaded if you are to get the best consumption.....that is 5p/litre more than unleaded

I'm currently thinking of buying a new Skoda Octavia and after some research I think that the best option for me will be the 1.4 TSI with the DSG gearbox.

I found a link to the Octavia Instruction manual and it recommends that the octane rating for 1.4 TSI is 95RON (see http://new.skoda-auto.com/com/model/...mentation.aspx

and follow the links on the left to 'Operating Instructions -> General Maintenance -> Fuel -> Petrol - Grades of petrol')

On this page it states :
Engines which need unleaded premium petrol 95 RON can also be run on unleaded regular petrol 91 RON. This does, however, result in a slight loss in performance.

If, in an emergency, the only fuel available is one which has a lower octane number than that required by the engine then only drive at medium engine speeds and lower engine loadings.

You can make unlimited use of fuel which has a higher octane number than that required by the engine. There will, however, be no advantages gained by this in terms of engine performance and fuel consumption!
    According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating) :
In the United Kingdom, 'regular' petrol has an octane rating of 95 RON, with 97 RON fuel being widely available as the Super Unleaded. Tesco and Shell both offer 99 RON fuel. BP is currently trialling the public selling of the super-high octane petrol BP Ultimate Unleaded 102, which as the name suggests, has an octane rating of 102 RON. Although BP Ultimate Unleaded (with an octane rating of RON 97) and BP Ultimate Diesel are both widely available throughout the UK, BP Ultimate Unleaded 102 is (as of October 2007) only available throughout the UK in 10 filling stations, and is priced at about two and half times more than their 97 RON fuel.
There appears then to be some conflicting advice between Skoda and other members of the VAG group. However you may be paying unnecessarily more for a higher grade of petrol. Although Wikipedia may also be incorrect regarding the Octane rating of 'regular' petrol (I haven't checked at my local petrol station yet).
