I've finally got around to working out the TCO of my Passat - the figures are, well, not pretty so bear with me:

    General:

    Mileage - 32,422.90
Pence per mile (fuel only) - £0.12

    Not bad I suppose

    Other Costs:

    Total Fuel Cost - £3,790.15
    Total Servicing Costs - £500.00
    Total Tyre Costs - £420.00
    Total Insurance Costs - £400.00
    Total Miscellaneous Costs - £665.00

I missed out a few service costs, so £500 is on the low side

    Overall Costs - £5,775.15

    MPG:

    Total Litres 3,399.36
    Total Gallons 747.86

    Total MPG 43.39
    Best MPG 48.97
    Worst MPG 39.97

    Not great, but pretty accurate

    Now the ugly side:

    Purchase Cost - £12,800.00
    Sale Cost - £6,000

    Overall Costs - £5,775.15
    Depreciation - £6,800.00
    Complete Costs - £12,575.15
    Months of ownership - 18
Cost Per Month (excl Depreciation) - £320.84
Cost Per Month (incl Depreciation) - £698.62
    Loan Amount - £250.00

Cost per month (Excl Loan) - £570.84

Complete Cost per month (Incl Loan) - £948.62

    Total costs - 39p a mile

It looks ugly, but I've factored absolutely everything in (I think) - Bear in mind, depreciation is something you only feel when you sell - the amount of £570.84 above is a more realistic interpretation of what the car cost me a month.

Worked out, it's not as horrendous as it looks:

    Fuel - £210.56
    Loan - £250
    Maintenance - £110.28

Looking at all this - I realise why I'm broke !

    Still loved the Passat though

Thanks - I'm trying to NOT look at it that way.....

I bought it from a Dealer which was my first mistake and then put 35k on it - The moral is to have NOT bought it from a dealer in the first place and to have probably held out for more money.

I was always going to make a loss TBH - I just didn't expect TCO to have been this high - hence the company car which is so far looking like a far more sensible option.

What age/mileage/spec is the car? £6k seems cheap for a TDI if lowish mileage?

I've spent 4 weeks looking for a 2.0 TDI on Ebay, Autotrader and Pistonheads. For £6k you get a 2006 (06) 1.9TDI with 100k miles or may be 55 plate 2.0 TDI.

Ebay is always a good reference to see what the worst case senario is.

I ended up buying direct from a fleet company. 2006 (06) 2.0 TDI SE with SatNav and 105k miles. Usual full history etc. I don't do too many miles (less than 10k a year) so it was an ideal purchase for me.

2005/55 2.0tdi SE - 73k, leather, Parking sensors & bluetooth - £6k seemed to be about the Private sale rate.

I'm anoyed at myself for not hanging on, but I wanted shut of the car.

Yeah, probably about right then. Still painful though

Have you swapped over to the Golf now? Did you not like the Passat?

I very nearly bought a Golf GT TDI but circumstances changed. I've always had the impracticle but fun cars and my wife has always had the boring 5 door cars. Now she has got a Mini it was my turn to sell the fun car and buy a family car with loads of room for the ankle snappers.

Sorry, just shocked, but I've done the same, bought from a dealer a VW Approved Used Passat.

I'm bored with it though and may part ex it after only 10 months and 6000 miles. An independent dealer has offered £10k for it (57plate, 19k miles, 1.9TDI Esate SE).

    That's a 3.5k loss, does that help.

I do indeed have the golf, but I rather like this side of the forums The Passat had to go for cost reasons - in that it was costing me a bloody fortune as you can see.

I have a new 09 plate GT TDi Golf which is a company car as, once I'd worked everything out, is cheaper to run than the Passat. No, it's not mine and I'd like for it to be, but on purely cost ground (lease cost, tax - as well as insurance, road tax, etc all being paid for) it's cheaper than owning and running the Passat.
