Yes Like I said the only way to change it is to either downgrade the firmware or new canbus, it certainly isnt upgrade. You may want to read up on it.

    Hi,

Hope you guys don't mind me dragging this subject up again, but I've just bought a 2006 GTI which is fantastic, but the fitted RCD300 is appalling! Before I shell out £450 on an RCD510, can I just confirm that if I take it to a VW dealer, they will be able to install it and any required Canbus update for me without the battery drain issue?

    Thanks all.

You cant 'update' the CAN gateway to resolve battery drain issues - it must be replaced.

You'd be far better off (both financially and in terms of aggravation) in fitting the radio yourself and finding someone with VCDS to code it for you rather than risking a dealer making a hash of it.

Fitting the radio and swopping the CAN gateway (if required) is easy and takes under 30 minutes.

Well, have bought an RCD510 and am hoping to have it fitted tomorrow.

Will post again once it's done to report on any issues I have either during fitting or after.

    Cheers for your advice.

Does this CanBus problem affect cars that do not have buttons on the steering wheel? I've got a 2005 Touran with no buttons on the wheel and the basic info display between the dials and was wondering about fitting an RCD 310.

No, its related to the age of the car. Basically the if the radio you intend to fit now was not available as an option on your car at the time your car was new then you might encounter problems.

Thats not a 100% exact statement of course, just a rough idea.

Depending on the age and/or software revision level of the stereo you intend to fit then you might have a battery drain issue on a 2005 car. Its easy to solve though and worth the effort for a better stereo in the car.

Thanks for the update. By easy to resolve do you mean changing the CanBus. Do you have any idea where would I find that on a Touran and how miuch would a replacement part cost or is it just a software update?

Yes, its easy to change. I dont know where it is on a Touran but it'll be behind the dash/centre console somewhere.

Price depends where you source one from, They come up on Ebay (and Ebay.de) or from the dealer I think they are around £110+vat IIRC .

As posted earlier in the thread, the gateway needs replacing - You cannot update the software on it.
