All changes will be overwritten when your vehicle is connected to vas diagnostic.
One protocol of the dealer vas machine is a comparison test where the server checks for conflicting changes from software installed in the vehicle from launch.Meaning your alterations may be reverted.
Also any code changes will show in the dealer workshop code so if you munk something the dealer can tell and void the warranty on said item if you do irreversible damage.
    have a nice day lol

does that mean i will need to re-eanble quattro everytime i go for a service?

Caution is good as you can do a lot of damage playing with the settings. However the options most people are playing with are the same options that are turned on in other markets and done by many many people without issue.

If a dealer was paid to do it then I presume you update the workshope server so it doesn't get lost? What if you then move and need work done elsewhere?

I had some retrofits done by my local dealer and was told in simple terms that the Audi server is updated so wherever I take my car in future, as long as it is a franchised operation, the dealer diagnostics will take whatever the Audi server says and leave the car with those authorisations.

Caused my local official dealer guru quite some grief when retrofitting the AMI but a print out was produced (without me asking) to prove the car's new status had been accepted by Audi so it wouldn't be wiped at future service visits.

All changes require a authorisation code called svm, adaptions need no svm code but code changes for example steering column control code change to enable cruise requires a code, this code will input the values into the control units to allow cruise and update the vehicles build list.
So if you retro fit cruise yourself and change steering code and enable engine ecu then your vehicle goes in to the dealer for service or anything else that requires vas hook up the comparison test will revert the code changes.Vas will prompt the user of the error and ask them to continue to reinstall correct long code but also say your engine ecu fails and requires replacemnet the long code is inputed on line so the operator has no input on the code so the code returned will be factory specification for that ecu, cruise not fitted.
    Make sense,simples bye bye

I guess what I'm getting as is if I had you within your dealership retrofit cruise control.... and then I move somewhere else and take it in to a different franchise group, will the new Audi tech (should he be doing an upgrade etc) think "hang on this isn't factory spec" or will your modification me updated on a country (or global) wide database?

Couldn't the tech just accept it and apply the changes after the upgrade or are they actually lost with now choice for the Audi techs ?

svm code changes the code so the server always recognises the change.Vas is not like vcds long code helper as the tech has very little information on long code as the server automatically calculates the software installed on the vehicle, only techs who understand long code hex will understand what is what.
    Typical long code

Sorry mate I'm being dumb tonight (Stella aided ).

When you say the server will recognise the change does that mean even if I paid a dealer to make the change, when I get the car updated (for whatever reason) I'm at risk of losing that change if done elsewhere (i.e. another dealership franchise)?

It does not matter who changes the code (vcds or vas)if there is no software version manager action code the changes will not be recorded at the fazzet central database for the vehicle so if a code change is detected and there has been no action code request sent then the code will be reversed.
If you say change a adaption setting for radio volume this will stay changed unless the radio is replaced. When the radio is replaced the tech sends the command to the server to replace radio
the server inputs the code the radio had when it left the production line
the change you made to the volume is defaulted as this is only adaption
So if you change any code or adaption and the dealer reverses the change then re input your alterations and they will work again.

    aha! Got it!

So since an auth code is needed, the current VCDS method of reading the dealer code and reappling it won't really help even if Ross-Tech spend some time on it.

On the plus side, if you **** it all up large style then all you have to do is go to the dealers and pay for them to upload the initial codes!

Can anyone tell me whether 20 quid VAG.com USB cables from ebay will work with B8 models? Are they worth the money or are they simply ebay rubbish...
