I tried to get my offside brake hub off over the weekend to inspect the brake shoes, It was almost impossible. I managed to free the rusty hub but could not get it off over the brake shoes without damaging them in some way. I could not see a way of making the overall diameter of the brake shoe position so as to make getting the hub off easily. Does anyone know if there is an easy way to get the hub off. Is there an adjuster/release nut for the auto adjusting brakes (if they have this) on the back of the backplate ?

Any simple advice would be appreciated.

Taking the drivers side as an example, look through on of the wheel bolt holes when positioned at around the 2 o'clock. You will see a hole which has the tail of a spring in it and this hole is at the base of a wedge. Using a long pointed stick (we use an old screwdriver ground to a point) lever the wedge upwards and you will hear/feel it rasp back to the stop. It is also a good idea to make back the handbrake cables right off. When you put it back together, have an assistant press the brake pedal down as you lever the wedge fully down. This will jam up the drum and a sharp thwack with a copper hammer should free it off but if not, gently tweak the wedge back a step in the rasp. When the drum runs freely with a little bind, set the handbrake cables up for three clicks.

Many thanks for your help on this. All I need now is a break in the weather one evening so I can have a look and try it out.

or you could remove the outer wheel bearing and use the wheel to wind the hub off (assuming you have left the wheel on?
