    Hi Chaps,

I have just bought an Audi A4 Avant, 1.9Tdi Sport 02Reg, engine code AWX with 118000 miles on the clock.

When I start the engine after a couple of seconds I see a puff of white smoke come out of the exhaust. Could this be a heater plug off, causing unburnt diesel.

    Thanks for any feedback.

My MkIV Golf diesel did this and it was either the coolant temperature sender or the glow plugs (I changed both and it went away).

Just an idea. It will probably show a fault in vag-com if it's the coolant sender.

How many miles are you doing each day?

    Condensation?

Check the coolant and then the oil for trace of a "cream" build up. - if cream build in oil or around cap.. head gasket.

I am doing about 34 miles a day, but have done some longer runs recently of about 90 miles. It is definately smoke I see for a couple of seconds rather than steam. Will check the water and oil later and let you know.

    Thanks

Checked the oil filler cap and it's clean, no mayonaise, dipstick shows no sign of water and the water level is ok as well.

Still think it is a glowplug or two off.

    Hi Chaps,

I have not found any cause to my smoke on starting problem, but, (not wanting to jinx things), the problem appears to have cleared up somehow.
