A3 2004 bonnet release

Hi there, i know this may have come up before but im stuck.

My bonnet will not release when i pull the lever in the drivers side footwell. The lever is also quite slack, the cable is still joined to the handle so i reckon it must be the other end.

But the thing is i cant get to the mecanism atall as the gap is so small, ive tried coming from under of the car but cannot get my arm through , ive also tried pulling the cadle with pliers but that didnt work either.

There must be someway to get it open so any ideas would greatly be received. I dont fancy smashing my grill off either.
