I have a 2003 Golf GTI (2.0L 115bhp) which has an illuminated engine managment light.

An independent VW specialist has examined the car today and advised that it is most probably the cat convertor which requires replacement. He has cleared the fault and asked me to run the car to see if the light re-appears! He has confirmed that the original CAT is fitted to the car

The replacement CAT is £542. Ouch! I was always led to believe these CATS indesctructable and very rarely broke. The car has only done 69k.

Has anyone else had a problem with the cat convertor on this model? Could it be anything else?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

    Mate,

That appears an incredibly low price! I would steer well clear.

The OEM CAT's are very inferior and will almost definetly break in record time.

I am told that VW will supply the new cat at a slightly discounted price as long as you give them the original back from the vehicle.

I would be cautious with this company you have found.

    Good luck.
