Hi Guys, this is my first post as i've recently bought my first Audi, and wanted to ask you something.

When i accelerate, there is a 'whining' noise coming from the engine (sounds like a police car in the distance!). It's only from about 1200rpm upto about 2300rpm (approx), after that i can't hear it, and i usually change gear by 3000rpm. It's only when i accelerate, if i put it in neutral and cruise, i can't hear it...

I've done a search on this forum, and came up with people saying it could be a normal thing for this car (it's on an 05 plate)...and that the turbo's are designed like this.

Has anyone else experienced this?... i also read someone else had this and got their auxilary belt tensioners done... (i'll be asking them how much they were!)... Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I fear your turbo could be on the way out as i recall seeing in other forums the noise that you describe being a sign that the bearings in the turbo are going/gone. I had an underboost error that kept appearing so trawled plenty of threads. how may miles on the car? hope i'm wrong!

oh, i hope not... i bought it from a 'dealer', and he said the turbo had been replaced and he had a 2yr warranty for it... so i'm doubting its that...

It's been happenin since i bought it with 86k on the clock, i've now done nearly 92k... its been serviced by a friend of mine, and he said he couldn't find anything.. might end up taking it to the audi dealer...

    Hi,

Just to let you know that i have the same problem with my 94K, 05, 2.0 TDI, mines does it between 1200 & 1800rpm, ive had it in to the main dealer who has told me it is coming from the turbo but not to worry about as the majority of them will do it within time (Nothing lasts forever), he did give me a price of £1400 to supply & fit it but i baulked at it & decided i could live with it. I have however found a place that can supply you a service exchange unit for £300 if your prepared to remove & fit it yourself.

    Cheers

So it is the turbo then? strange, because the bloke i bought it from said it'd had a new turbo (re-con) fitted.... and it had a 2yr warranty with it.

Thanks for the info mate, will keep you in mind if i need more details...cheers

If the guy has told you it has allready had a new turbo then check the Air/Vacuum hoses on the turbo are all tight & dont have splits/holes in them, you may get lucky with this, these are quite common aswell & could be a simple & very cheap cure for you.
If it aint causing you performance problems & its just the distant police car sound, i would "let it develop".

    Cheers
