I have a problem with 98 Tdi. The dashboard warning beeper constantly sounds and i've been reliably informed it's due to the rear right ABS sensor. I've had this replaced but it still constantly faults, which has led me to believe that it's a wiring problem, something i'm not going to set about curing!!
The beeping doesn't really bother me, but in a few weeks we're going away on holiday that's going to require a 4 hour drive, a journey that i'd like to be peaceful while my little girl sleeps in the back. Does anyone know how to disable the audible part of the alarm??
Any help would be very gratefully received.......

im not entirely sure but with my car after a fault on the airbag, the light was on and after repair the light was still on it needed resetting using the vagcom device, my mate works for audi so he used this and the light was out! try ringing up audi tomorrow to see if after the sensor is changed it needs a reset

    Hope this helps, John

Sounds like you have a dry solder joint in your ABS control unit this can cause the beep and warning lights to flash which means your ABS isn't going to work anyway so just disconnect the multipin plug that goes to your ABS unit, it won't affect your brakes it just means your ABS won't work and in this case it won't work anyway if there's faults in the system! We take these units to a Bosch service guy who fixes the dry solder joints or do it ourselves if time permits! It's a fairly cheap repair but lack of knowledge among mechanics is the greatest enemy to your pocket because a lot of them will probably advise you to replace it(at a huge cost to you!)

I tried unplugging the ABS controller but all i got was more alarms, and more beeping, unfortunately!!
I set about removing the dash/instrument cluster to physically remove the offending noisy bit, but a huge word of warning to anybody considering doing a similar thing, in doing so I managed to render both my keys totally useless!!!
It turns out that the engine immobiliser control unit is actually in the dash, and once you've unplugged it then it will no longer recognise your keys, and hence not disarm the immobiliser!! Anyway, £120 worth of mobile auto-engineer now gives me a running car after having both my keys re-programmed,....you have been warned

Many thanks to those who tried to help me, I know we didn't get it quite right, but hey, you've got to try!....

Do you think this could be the problem with my old Octavia? Sounds sensible to me...

I knew that! The best thing to do is get a diagnostic scan, find the problem and fix it. These are large heavy cars and ABS will really slow them whilst a locked wheel won't. Plenty of indies and guys on here with VCDS so a scan needn't cost main dealer prices. IMO the person that advised you to disconnect the plug from the ABS was being totally irresponsible. If the car isn't roadworthy eg (brake problems) take a bus get a cab but don't drive, you could be endangering yourself or someone else and if you're involved in an accident it's your fault irrespective of who hit who.
