My other half owns a 2005 Polo 1.9tdi 130. Recenetly the 'ESP off' light together with the icon showing the 'skidding car' has started to light-up intermitantly. Sometimes it only stays on for a few minutes & other times stays on longer.
The car has been plugged-into a VW computer which has shown the following: ECM has no load signal from the alternator, possible wiring fault or faulty alternator. The alternator has been checked for under/over charging, but all is okay.
Can anyone please help with suggestions for resolving this problem??
Also what has the alternator to do with the ESP system/light??

    Many thanks.

    Chas.

I think I can now be more specific reagrding the results from the VW computer. This is what it said:

    Diesal - Direct Fuel Injection / Glow Plug System w/pump - i
    1 Fault / notes detected
    17911 P1503 035
Load signal from generator terminal DF.

    ABS/EDL/ASR/ESP - Bosch 8.0
    1 Fault / notes detected
    18265 000
Load signal - fault signal from engine control module.

    Hope this helps????

What is the engine code (ASZ, BLT?) and is the chassis number before wvwzzz9Nz5Y180000 or after wvwzzz9Nz5Y500001?

It is a 2006 model but registered 29/09/2005.

Both codes point to a faulty alternator IF the wiring is OK. A fault code read of the central electrics unit should also be carried out to see if there is a code there as the blue L wire from the alternator goes into this unit and I would check the 2 pin wiring connector on the starter motor top clip where a blue and a brown/red wire have connections and make sure these are clean and not snapped, paying special attention to the brown/red wire which is the DFM signal to the engine ECU.

Thanks for that info Crasher. I will get those points checked out & let you know how I get on.

Presumably if all of the other checks you have mentioned are ok, then it is a faulty alternator that is turnig off the ESP system?
