I had this exact same problem on my TDi 115, power to a point then cut out, and if I restarted the engine was fine. Thought it was the MAF, replaced this and still had the same problem, in the end it turned out to be a loose air hose as well, would check out these options before looking at turbo as only cost me about £130 to sort in the end.

    Goes great now

Beetle still at VW for further disgnostic tests - maybe N75 valve, may be turbo, maybe just hoses. Will keep you posted, will hear today. Incidentally: anyone know of a good VW independent in the Exeter area?

To recap-My TDI Sport Passat has very poor torque at all revs but pulls at about 70% efficiency before going into limp. After having changed AMM and N75 and checked throughout the engine bay for cracked hoses I has a closer look at the turbo actuating lever to see if it was jammed (and preventing the vanes from moving). After removal of the intake plumbing between the turbo and the AMM I reached down as was just about able to lift the vacuum actuating rod. I moved it several times in an attempt to 'free up' the vanes. It seems quite hard to do this and I wonder if the vaccum actuator is able to overcome the friction of the moving parts within the vane mechanism. I was hoping that I could have 'freed up' the mechanism in this way without removing the turbo but I'm sure now that a proper clean up of the turbos moving parts is in order.

OK: problem fixed (hopefully) - after going through the "could be a replacement turbo, could be the N75 valve etc" routine, it was a split hose that has been trimmed and re-connected.
