Hi all, i'm very interested in buying a 2005 A4 Avant 2.0TDI S Line (140). Any views / comments on its strengths or weaknesses would be greatly valued. Also, i guess within a (small) time i will be interested in a remap - is this a good engine to cope with this without further mods?

    Many thanks,

Had my 2005 A4 Avant 2.0TDI S Line (140) for around a year and a half. Lovely cruiser.

The MPG is nowhere near as good as what the book states. That was one downer for me.

Had the 140 remapped to circa 175ish. Goes like a rocket and when driven steadily I now achieve 43mpg.

The clutch is the same on the 140/170 A4's so that should cope with the power if remapped.

Take a look around this section of the forum for a vibration when idling when standing. Seems that quite a few (including mine) suffer from this.

To be honest, I love the car, but it does have it's little niggles.

Positives outweight the negatives. Had the rear windows tinted also, looks fantastic, people always comment on how nice it looks

If you want details on the remap drop me a pm. You around the Birmingham area?

My mpg is feeble - circa 35. Did your remap give a slight upwards nudge on mpg too?

Honestly....no. The first full tank after a remap is always low. With the 140 now having the power of your 170 if not a tad greater its nice to feel the greater kick from the engine.

After the initial wow factor wears off you simly feel like the power is normal and drive it steadily.

Saying that, all the new power didnt result in a drop. It merely stayed the same.

Driving normally with the remap it has. 43 mpg twice in a row. That is with my pulse driving (see my other thread) Simply coasting on hills when possible in 5th/6th gear.

A remap on a 170 would be outstanding! Would it give you more mpg? Depends on how you drive it. You do have to work with the remap though.

thanks all, its all very interesting. I'd love a TFSI but cannot afford the fuel costs. I'm interested in the view that the 1.9TDI is preferablre to the 2.0TDI. I thought the later 16v engine would naturally be better. Is this not the case - i've plenty of option for 1.9TDI S Line.

If the average is only 35mpg i'd gain nothing by going diesel!

And really, the b6 is a better motor overall? I'm getting confused now..!

B6 1.9 tdi 2 wheel drive will average 45 to 55 mpg.The B6 1,9 pd is far far more reliable than the 2.0 pd in the b7.The B6 ages well with few problems compared to the B7.If you jump to the new common rail in the B8 you get back to good old reliable Vag engines ,well so far.My opinion is based on my findings being on the inside of the dealers.I DO THINK THE B7 LOOKS GREAT

Cool, advice taken. I want this car to last the next 5-7 years so i'm keen on getting the latest possible model. For my budget that is the b7. Should i go for a 1.9TDI S Line b7, or is the b6 better in other respects too?

B7 1.9 pd are quite rare but they are fine.just try to avoid the 2,0 and especially any with a dpf filter
