Has anyone actually done (DIY) an after-market front fog light kit to a B6 Highline (2008) (UK). Harness suppliers say recoding is required to get functionality on new switch. VW say it can not be done! I am confused! Help and/or instructions much appeciated.

You have to ask vw what "onboard supply control unit" you have. They all have an output for rear fog light but apparently they don't all have a front foglight output. In theory you can check by looking at the connector pins. There are two out put 11 pin connectors. Black one needs pin 4 to work and brown one needs pin 2 to work. A good autoelectrician could get everything to work for you just bypassing the onboard supply control unit but that would be up to you.

There was a thread on here a while ago about them and the consensus was that they are a waste of time.

The only time I've used mine was to check that they work.....

Thanks, food for thought, but are yours a retro fit - and if so how?

Yep, the front fogs look pretty but are an utter waste of time.
If I didn`t already have them I certainly wouldn`t contemplate fitting them.
If you already have the units, just stick `em in, don`t bother with the wiring, as they are only for show - and they are prone to breakage from stones etc.

Mine were part of the car's package, and they are generally reckoned to be a bit of a waste of time.

Might be worth doing a search on here (B6) for foglights.

Would not agree they are a total waste of time. Its just they only show any benefit when its real fog not the stuff which is really just mist. A few times a year we get really bad fog on on a high (for round here) road running across a flat plain. Dips just give a white wall but fogs on their own get right down low and illuminate the verges. You can't go more than 10-15mph but in those conditions thats enough.

For retrofit try vwvortex. Its a common USA mod and I think there's a dedicated thread in the B6 forum.

That's interesting - we don't get much fog here so as I said I've never used mine. I was summarizing a previous thread.

I should say that I had fogs and used them on my cars in the UK in just the conditions you describe. Must try to find some fog....

I agree with gamchea. Very rare occasions when fog lamps are really needed however. Far more occasions when they are just used as "poseur lamps" adding extra dazzle with dips on also. Not really worth the extra unless fitted as standard (or you want to pose!)
