Hi I have recently started having problems with my Transporter starting when cold, since I live in the tropics this should not be a problem but after taking it to a service centrer today they said it looks like the fuel pump needs to be replaced or reconditioned, since it has only done 125000 kms I feel that this may not be the answer.Has anyone had problems with the fuel pumps on these vehicles.

Two things spring to mind, coolant temperature sender and glow plugs. First of all get it fault code read if applicable, what is your engine code? What is the average morning temperature down there at the moment?

Could be the fuel pump timing,

I had the belts changed on mine a while back but the garage did not use vag com or any other diagnostic equipment to set the timing correctly.

It seemed ok for while but after a cold spell here last year, the van would start but the engine stumbled and I was getting a cloud of smoke out the back. I wasn't happy at all.

I changed the glow plugs but it was still the same so I got it checked for fault codes and injection pump timing, The specialist I went to informed me that there were no fault codes but the pump timing was quite a way out and that they had re-set it.

It now starts a treat and as I understand it the timing has to be spot on or you will have trouble starting a cold engine.

I realise it's not as cold where you are but it might be worth a shot before going down the new pump route?

My 2.5 TDI has done 110,000 miles by the way.
    Matt.

Thanks Guys I will take it to another service center and have a different person look into the problem. The average morning temps are about 19-20 deg C so it is not all that cold.I should mention that on starting clouds of white smoke come out.
