Droning noise from rear

Hi

I'm getting a droning noise from the rear of my 2.5TDi T4 Transporter 2002. It seems to happen when you get to around 35-40mph & again at 65-70mph, but seems to quieten at other speeds. There's also some feedback through the steering wheel (bit of a mild shake) which I suspect is wheel balancing - but thought I'd mention it in case they are connected.

Any ideas what this might be?

Could be a wheel bearing. You could check by jacking it up, and supporting with an axle stand or similar. Chock the wheels on the ground, let the handbrake off and grasp the wheel top and bottom. Give it a wobble and see if there is any play in the bearing.

Thanks, I'll give that a go this evening. I did wonder if it might be a wheel bearing issue when I first heard it - but have been reading lots of horror stories about diff bearings going wrong & owners having similar noise complaints! Another thing that was posted up on the VWT4 forum was that it might also be a bit of noise from the tyres (we've got low profile tyres on aftermarket alloys) - but I think the noise is too loud for it to be just that.
Let's just hope it's not an expensive fix in the end!
