Touareg intermittent third brake light

Hi, I'm new to the forum and came across the site via a Google search .

My 2005 Touareg throws up a check brake lights warning and it has an intermittent third brake light fault. The third brake light only works 50 percent of the time and I wondered if this is a common fault with this model. Could it be a faulty brake light switch or the light unit itself (LED's)? Any help or advice appreciated, thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply. Is the switch easy to get to, and if so, how can I diagnose that it is definitely that?

An intermittent fault is sometimes difficult to source.Rather than pull half the vehicle apart,to look for a poor connection,it is much easier to replace the switch,it is above the brake pedal.The fault should show up on a diagnosis,which you will pay maybe £30 for.
