Ok - I don't think there is anything wrong with my Passat but the mpg is just not that great. I worked out the mpg by filling the tank and then refilling it and the mpg came out as 42.5mpg - this is exactly what the computer said for the average mpg! With my Golf I could drive it how I wanted and it nearly always returned 50ish mpg - I guess that's not the case with a bigger car.

I still wouldn't swap back - the Passat is great - it's hard to beat a mk4 Golf PD GT TDi though!

Just thought I'd mention this, my 2004 TDi 130 Passat had "sticky" rear brakes (only binding a little bit) which caused the pads to wear quicker than normal. Once the "sticky-ness" had been resolved I noticed a few mpg difference on the computer.....

Any chance you have got "sticky" brakes?!

I think the brakes are fine but one of the front CV joints could be on the out. I'm sure I read somewhere that 42.7 is what VW say is average?

Just got into this thread and would say...

My 130 Passat Estate usually returns between the mid 30's and low 40's on a tank of mostly motorway driving. I do hoon it everywhere though (there are two speeds; fast and faster as far as I'm concerned). All I know is that if I were in a petrol and drove it the same the mpg would be high teens to mid 20's.

I think yours is about right.

That sounds fair enough - thanks for your replies. A Mondeo estate is probably more economical however economy isn't everything!

You're spot on there. I had a Mondeo 2.0 TDCi hire car some time ago for a couple of weeks and the best I could get driving very gently was about 45mpg. The Passat I have now, is averaging around the 53 mark on this tank.

The only thing good about the mondeo was that the engine was much smoother and quieter.
