    Hi there,

Am new to owning a golf (had been a peugeot fan then had a temporary loss of sanity and bought a MGF - more trouble than it was worth but looked nice!!).

I now have a 2000 Golf GTI (2.0ltr version) and have a few questions:

    1) what is good MPG for these cars - I seem to be do around 350 miles to a tank full (about 42 pound) and the trip computer tells me I average around 36-38 mpg (I dont thrash the car, dont brake hard and all that but feel its not as good on the juice as i expected). Is there any way I can improve the MPG? I am planning on changing the plugs, filters and may as well put some new oil in whilst doing so (I am competant at servicing cars so wont have any problems doing this).

    2) Which oil is good for GTi - the hand book says VW500 00 or VW 502 00 but would imagine this is costly as sounds like its a VW product only - what grade of alternative oil could I buy from Halfords?

    3) I have looked at threads on this site about the climatronic problems, mine also has a problem where by the fan will only work first thing in the morning - genereally if its below 2 degrees (but then thats not always the case). When the fan does kick in it sounds a little rough - anyone had a similar problem? I had though the brushes had gone but read other threads and they suggest that the fan simply will not work at all - but mine works for about 10 mins on a morning! The climatronic system does flash for about 15 seconds indicating there is a fault in the system (all fuses are ok and I had it plugged into a diagnostics which showed the following parts as being at fault - 01274 Air Flow Flap Motor V71 and 01273 Fresh Air Blower V2) Its a bit cold driving to work!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated - apart from that Its a great car wish I'd have bought a Golf instead of all those French cars and , ahem, british one!!

    Thank

    Matthew

mid to late 30's from a 2 litre I would be happy with that.

My last motor was a 2003 2 litre hyundai coupe and on a long run driving sensibly i would be lucky to be touching 28 mpg it was a night mare. £100 a week on fuel alone!!!!!

36 - 38 mpg?? I'd be more than happy with that on a GTi.
Ex Golf GT TDi 150. Then an Evo 8. Then a Honda S2000. Now an Evo 5 (and a little pug 106)

i agree..... i touch that with mine, and mines a tdi ! 38mpg out of a 2.0 gti is not at all bad going

also, bear in mind, the greatest mpg is gained on the m.way when you are doing a steady 65/70

    i have 2.0ltr GTi 115bhp.

i get similar sorts of read outs from the computer.

mine drinks juice but I don't think it's all that bad. I reckon about 80miles from £10 and my journeys are mostly shortish between 7-30miles a time. I do have a tendancy to put my foot down here and there but nothing to daft. Especially after my recent run in with ecilop's
