Well Golf 4 master and slave cylinder failure are very common but as you have replaced both, the only connection I can see is the fluid supply from the reservoir on top of the brake master cylinder which also supplies the clutch. If the fluid level is correct and there is no air in the system, one of the new components is faulty and with those symptoms I would suspect the clutch master cylinder. Where did the master and slave come from? I hope that it isn’t the slave cylinder that is faulty!

Thanks for your reply Crasher all levels of fluid are fine and there does'nt seem to be any air in the system when it is bled the gear box went at christmas and I had it repaired. While the gear box was out I had a new clutch put in and a slave cylinder, several days later this problem started so I had the master cylinder changed which solved the problem but unfortunately 3months later (yesterday) the same problem has ocurred. From what you have said and my experience it points to the master cylinder again would you agree. Is there any other reason why the master cylinder would fail again as the original master cylinder lasted for 6 years without a problem. Many thanks again Crasher

It depends on where the parts came from. I have seen white box unbranded pattern slave cylinders fail before the car even leaves the workshop. What make were the parts?
