Remember to include in your calculations the fact that depending on your annual mileage, you will probably save around £400-£500 pounds a year on fuel with a 1.9TDI over a 1.2 Punto.

just an update really since ive been a way on holiday and all that. well after searching high and low and driving many wonderful wonderful golfs i have decided screw the 1.4! i want a better one. so after driving many of the better engines i.e. 1.9 tdi and a 2 ltr gti. i found these 100 x's better than the 1.4. originally i thought i would be happy but after driving the bigger engines 5 or 6 diff times, they are just so better.

anyhow i seen a 2 litre gti which i loved and had the makings to be my first great car but then the horror struck! i phoned my insurance company (quinn-direct) and to my shock was told i could not be insured over 90bhp! could anyone tell me since when has anyone knocked back potentially more money!

has anyone come across this with quinn or anyone else? ive looked through my policy and all their "key facts" blah blah and cant find a single thing about this. could this be true? because of this delay i have now lost the golf i wanted as it is sold.

has any1 got any advice? i dont wanna move insurers because im 6 months into my premium and want that extra 1 yr ncb (im 21). i thought i'd bite the bullet and just drop it but when i compared an insurance on the gti with 3 yrs ncb compared to 2 yr ncb it was 580 quid!

what would you's guys do? i cant find any insurer who would transfer those 6 months so i could finish the yr, they all say i have to start a new premium.

    ahhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yep i can belive this, they were reluctant about insuring me on my 80bhp brava...

however there is nothing stopping you from getting a 1.9 tdi 90bhp, the early VE engines were produced with the 90/110 variants.

had i got my gt tdi before i was 21, i wouldnt have even got insured full stop.....

also, the transfer of the 6 months, they are correct in what they are saying, you can only transfer complete years NCB, not at months at a time.

my advice therefore would be, wait for another 6 months and try again... i had to do this with my golf, i wouldnt have afforded it otherwise.

well an interesting thing happened, i phoned quinn up yesterday and said look i cant see a thing about the 90 bhp anywhere at all. and they've turned round and said they will now insure me on a 1.9tdi! or the gti. which im very pleased about but it baffles me how it can differ from person to person within the company!

Thats very true, I've just bought an 2002 Audi A4 1.8T which is group 15 I think and looked for insurance through confused.com. The best deal they came up with was Admiral @ £1500 fully comp at 21 years of age with 0 years NCB and 1 accident (not my fault).

Totally by chance, my mum wanted to drive it on the odd occasion and the addition of her to my policy knocked £300 off!

good to hear... but do me one favour mate, make sure you get it confirmed in writing, quoting your policy number....

these companies can say things and go back on them quite easily, if its in writing, there is no confusion....

about that i think, trade anyway, you will alway save if buying privatley, but have little/no comeback should anything go wrong.

just as a rough guide, i got my w plate gt tdi 115, with 76k on the clock, for a snip under 5500, that was a 'fair' price, remember, you will never get a bargain off a dealer, if it seems too good to be true, 9/10 times it is...
