Hi there, new to the forum, and looking for some help with my mk3 Golf CL TDi, which has a problem with the front driver side electric window
control to both front windows. Sounds very similar to the issue on this
page (which the op didn't post the resolution!):

    http://www.singletrackworld.com/foru...ectric-windows

When using the electric switch you hear a clicking, as if the motor is just
starting and stopping. I have tried a new switch, and a different window
mechanism (incl motor), and those are the same. This leads me to the relay, which is the last thing for me to look at. Is that under the bonnet? I am not familiar with that part...

Can any one offer any pointers?

They don’t have a relay, they have an auto resetting thermo fuse on the relay plate under the driver’s side of the dash but each motor has its own control unit. Pull back the wiring conduit in each door jamb and check the thick brown wire to see if it has snapped.

I'll nip the door pad off tomorrow. I had the whole mechanism out yesterday and didn't notice any wiring problems though.

No, the rubber wiring conduit tube between the door and the body, not inside the door, the area known as a “door jamb”.

Just looked up some other information, seems that a few others have had the same sounding issue and it turned out to be an iffy earth. Do you know where the earth is on that part of the loom?

    Thanks

It is provided by the thick brown wire I have told you to look at, the feed to the brown wire is very good and I have never had a problem with it and if it failed you would have other problems. A clicking from the door is usually a seized motor/mechanism or broken brown main earth wire in the door jamb conduit tube. Your experience is nothing new, the first time I had to deal with this on a Golf 3 was back in 1995.

Found the issue. It was the brown live cable that you mention, bit of a pig to see it, but the cable was damaged and now working ok after replacing. Thanks for the pointer .

Glad you found it, it is an earth through, not a live. VW use brown for earth and red for live or black for ignition switched live where others use black for earth.
