I have a 1.4 2001 AUA Polo. Due to a Fault code 17604 and ECU light I suspect a Lambda probe.

Just bought a Bosch 5 wire Lambda sensor from the motor factors, which they say is was the correct one and fitted it.

Now, straight away the Engine light comes on. Read the codes. Now I have 3.
    17589
    17524
    17604

all lambda related. The car ran fine.

Do I need to program the ECU with this new sensor or should it work without.

I put the old sensor back in, erased the codes. ECU light now 'off' back to square one.

Anyone out there with some advice please?

    Steve

heater circuit code..that will still come on line when the exhaust gets hot enough to make the lambda work but will still log a code, may be that was the wrong sensor or a faulty unit they gave you

Or maybe the wiring to the sensor has failed? Common problem is that the wires get brittle and break. You might want to check continuity of the wiring from the ECU to the sensor connections. (I suggest you do this with the wiring unplugged from the sensor and the ECU so you do not damage the electronics in either part)
