Performance or economy remaps?

Not even a week into A6 ownership, and I'm already considering a remap.

51 plate A6 1.9 TDi 130. Remaps claim up to 35bhp increases. But I've also seen mention of economy based remaps as well?

Any idea what the differences are between the two? Are economy maps based on torque increases?

Also, would the engine longevity be affected at all by such changes?

Have a look at 'chippeduk' website - they're connected to the 'chip n spin' remap days run for this forum. And then have a look at the 'chip n spin' remap feedback threads on the forum also.

I think it is virtually impossible to conclude if longevity is affected - depends on how you drive and I think an element of mechanical sympathy, combined with an **** approach to oil changes will improve the chances of longevity. Most individuals (including me) who have had a remap are pleased with the results.

I'd like to remap mine one day too. Although apparently going from stock 130bhp to 180bhp would mean you need to fit an uprated clutch.

Its important to remember, after the remap you would need to drive the car the same way as you did before, i.e. not booting it all the time and screaming "powerrrrrrr!" because that just cancels out the economical gain of the remap.

I'm more likely to go from 130 to maybe 160 tops.

Doubt I'll scream "powerrr" (thinking of doing that puts a smile on my face though!), more like "torques!!!!" (doesn't sound as good).

And having had a go at booting it something rotten a few nights back, doubt a 30bhp gain would give much more of a shove in the back. Would love to try it though!

As mine rolled off the dyno test at 191bhp, they told me it wasn't about the power, it's more about the torque. Chipped UK reckon that standard clutches are ok up until about 320-340ft lb of torque. Mine was measured at 306ft lb and is still running the original clutch/flywheel from new. However, I do get some vibration/shudder on full blast acceleration, which could either be the flywheel creaking at the edges, or a fueling issue.

191bhp??? Thats way more than I would have ever expected - is that a standard tuning job, o rhave you had other work done?

I'm also very interested in this. Do these tuning companies need your car on a rolling road or are they available as a self-fit option based on standard mappings? I've only ever had a custom mapping in the past but have heard that standard mappings are available.

Does anyone know if this is an option? I'm seeking economy rather than power.

No no no don't do it!

You'll get nothing but error codes and poor fuel consumption. Those boxes will do nothing but trick the car into over-fuelling.

Anyway, standard mappings are available in a 'chip'. Some TDI owners on here speak highly of DPT tuning boxes (chips) that are removable at the owners discretion. I would like to try one of these myself, but at £325 a pop they aren't cheap either.

Some people say a remap is smoother than a tuning box, I can't speak of any experience on that. But a custom map in theory should be better than a tuning box, as it fairly specific to your car.

Its all down to how you drive it.. ! Our maps work over 50% loud and 50% power so the extra get up and go is only there when you need it.. This will help impove the MPG.. The other thing that really helps is the fact the car is under powerd at 130hp etc etc.. With more power you wont have to use the box to over take and get the car to speed etc. The extra in gear power will do this for you.. We did a 520d Estate last week the guy was siing 50MPG now he is getting 54MPG..

As for the clutch it is a weak point as your having to move a big car.. BUT saying that its all down to how the car has been driven all its life. Some will need changing some wont..
