audi 80 diesel temp guage

Hi, new to this sight. temperature guage doesn't work on my audi 80 1.9 tdi ,Just wondered if the temperature guage issue would be the same with diesels as well as petrols? Any ideas greatfully received.

1.9 location is item 11 or 12
According to the "family album" which is for illustration purposes only, so it might not be exactly where it's shown on there.
Item 13 is the temp sender for the ecu
Wires near to the engine have been known to perish so try to check for continuity while you are in there.
Be very careful around the fan when doing any work around temperature sensors as the fan may start unexpectedly. Unplug it to be safe.
