2005 Passat saloon parking sensors issue

Hi, I am experiencing an intermittent problem with my 2005 passat saloon. I have rear parking sensors which seem to work as expected 70% of the time. However, sometimes when I put the car in reverse, instead of a beeping sound, I am getting a consistent noise (i.e. no beeps, just a constant squeal from the sensors). This is happening when parked away from any objects and the sensors are clean. Can anyone help?

I had the same problem with my car; strangely mine would only work correctly when the car was soaking wet. A fault code will be stored which identifies which sensor is faulty (i.e. middle left, outer left etc) so best to get someone to do a scan with VAG COM. With my car, I cleared the code and swapped sensors to check that the fault was with the sensor and not the wiring loom. I then read the fault codes again which indicated it was a faulty sensor. I then tried to take the sensor apart which was a bad idea as I completely destroyed it!! The new sensor cost me approx £60 from VW and then another £10 for the local bodyshop to paint it.
