I had a basic 1974 Austin Allegro in all its BL glory, complete with it's "Quadratic" steering wheel and rubber bungie suspension straps that were intended to stop the swinging arm rear suspension dropping down too far - had to replace them on a monthly basis.

I remember all sorts of warnings about jacking the car only on it's jacking points as anywhere else would twist the shell! Getting a puncture repaired was a nightmare where some pookie "know it all" apprentice would slide a trolley jack under the suspension and look at me as though I had two heads when I asked him did he know about the jacking instructions for these cars.

That said it was a good wee car, it always got us to where we wanted to go.

Perhaps doesn't count, but my Dad had a G reg Jetta 1.6 (I think) Diesel.

    Handled like a bus,
    Sounded like a bus,
    Went like a bus,
    As heavy as a bus.

My dad used to leave for work at 5:30 in the morning and my Mum's friend who lived 5 houses up the road always said, "I heard Dave leave for work this morning...".

    Haha.

My mum and dad also owned an old Y reg 1.0l Polo which they owned from new. After 21 years, and clocking 220,000 miles, my sister got hold of it, and drove it to work at 100mph on the M11 in December at 3am most mornings. She couldn't work out why it used to start dying and eventually had to stop "for a rest" for 5 mins. I later learnt that it was probably the carb icing up.

After 240,000 miles, it was sold for £180, and I kept seeing it for another year driving round the town.

    What a car.

An £80 P Reg Ford Mondeo LX I bought from a car auction when I was a poor student. It had nearly 200k on the clock when I got hold of it. The cam bet tensioner disintergrated around six months after ownership and I drove it home 9 miles then replaced the belt and tensioner the next day without incident. I sold it after 2 years for £100 with no MOT and a little bit of TAX.
You may think I'm being helpful yet sarcastic, this is only because I feel I need to help you to help yourself in the future

1982 Austin Montego 1.6 GL in Red cost me £300 back in 1991 and I think by the time I sold it a year later the doors were made out of fibre glass

A Marina 1.3... Needed a really cheap car and a mechanic mate went to his brother who worked at a garage... Found the Marina and told us it was £125 but wouldn't start... We went over and [played with it for an hour and got it going... Went back and said £75 (£50 for our time!)... Took it home and got some Wollies Dark Brown high gloss paint and painted the lower half... It did 8k miles in 6 months and for some reason only used water (apart from petrol!)... One time we drove it from Glasgow to Bristol following the Stock Cars, got pulled over by the police on the way down due to a faulty rear light... My mate said to keep them talking and he sorted the problem, a bulb had dropped out of the holder! The coppers couldn't believe the journey we were doing with it... But it was a good little buy... In the scrapyard in the sky now though... The paint couldn't stop the rust!

A 4 year old lada riva which had a years tax and mot for £100, I think the tax was worth more than that lol.
I drove it for a year without spending one penny on it and not even looking at the oil, I sold it a year later for a £100.

In that time a friend of mine bought an FSO which was the same crap car but made in Poland, and every time he would see my car he would smash into it, and I would do the same, by the time I finished with it I dont think it had a straight panel lol.

Also it was only £75 for a years insurance and my previous car an XR3 was £900 so it also saved me a fortune on insurance plus I didnt have to lock it lol.
