If your loosing coolant into the sump the oil would emmulsify and go almost custard like.
If you changed the oil and it was clean as you say it can't be going in to the sump.

Have a look at the engine. Over the back (bulkhead side) see if you can see any recessed blanking plugs. I think they're called ice plugs. Any way check and see if they have any holes or cracking. Usualy if they fail they completely go and coolant will poor out but I have known pin holes occur which may explain the loss.
They are quite an easy self repair. Pop them out with a screw driver and the new ones just tap into place.

    Hope this helps

just my 2 cents, but i would find a different mekanic, preferably one that will perform a pressure test on the cooling system. this involves removing the expansion tank cap and fitting a tool that will pressurise the cooling system to about 15psi. the engine is then inspected for leaks. you can also start the engine, and if the pressure guage goes up, you have a head gasket problem. if no leak is found, its worth removing the cam cover and using a mirror on a stick and a torch, having a look at the water pump, as these can leak.

    HI
I read in elsa that there is posibility for losing of coolant through glow plug thread, if is so, you must put some special sealant which is recomanded by audi/vw, I think that they write a number. Another thing, also I read in italian magazines for cars (few years ago for vag group) that there was a recall for this type of engine (2.0 TDI) due to bad head, head cracks around 100000 km!

    Hi.
    I had a 2.0 TDI A3 year 2005.
    Engine coolant kept disappearing.
My brothers a mechanic at Audi, he checked it out and the technicians there including the master tech's initial thoughts or either too much pressure so forcing too much coolant to be used or a common fault on the A3 is the radiator leaking. Turns out after he took catching plate off frim under the engine there was shed loads of coolant there. He dips his finger in and tastes it to see. The radiator was leaking so new radiator was required.

I then part-ex'd the car in for an A6.

Hello all. Just seen this thread and wanted atmos to know that on the TDIs the EGR coolers are prone to leaking internally, i've done plenty under warrenty and retail. Sometimes people notice excess white smoke from the exhaust.

    HTH.

Just to reiterate what Mr V says, I had a similar problem with my A3 2.0 TDI losing coolant and after taking it to an Audi dealer, they diagnosed there was oil in the coolant and recommended a cylinder head replacement, which I had done (with the garage I bought it from paying the bill) but this didn't sort the problem. Had it back into the dealer and they successfully diagnosed the EGR cooler as the problem at a cost of about £400 to replace (which again the garage I bought the car from paid).
