Heya sorry if this has been covered before but any advice would be welcome.
I need to remove the alternator but the viscouse fan is in the way of the bottom mounting bolt.
Is there an easy way to remove the fan or do i need to take off the front of the car?
I tried to wedge the fan pulley but cant seem to undue the bolt at the back.

there should be holes in the pulley that you insert an implement through to lock the pulley opto the housing. you have to lock it, undo a little then use another hole to turn it more, and so on.you insert the tool from the rear, next to the allen bolt you are trying to undo. the holes in the pulley are barely visible.

    Thn for your reply
However , i see the hole in the fan pully but when i put in a bar through the hole , there seems nothing to wedge it against , it just sort of rolls down and slides into the gap and gains no purchase when i turn the bolt.
I must be doing it wrong and its late , thats my excuse

push the bar in from behind. theres a hole for it to fit through. you then have to wriggle it until it goes through the hole in the pulley.

I managed to remove the alternator in my 04 1.9TDi without removing the fan. If you loosen both bolts right off, remove the top one then pry the alternator off the top mounting with a bit of persuasion you can get it out with out removing the fan.

Yay , thnx guys all sorted now. it does indeed slip out nicely , if you pry it off the top mounting, the bottom bolt can be teased out
