Oil Pressure Problems??

Hi Everyone,

Some great information on here and some obviously knowledgeable people (hoped iv'e sucked up enough

)
maybe someone can help with the following,

I have a 2002 Bora 1.6 petrol and the red oil pressure light started flashing, i stopped immediately and turned off the engine, the oil level indicator was at the maximum so fine, i gingerley started it up again and sounded fine, after a couple of minutes tick over and higher evs i could hear the tappets a little louder, indicating no oil getting to top of engine, the oil pressure light then started flashing again so had the car recovered without driving,
the pick up pipe was checked and the oil replaced but still same??
i assume it can only be the oil pump but after removing the pump its only a simple mechanical part and cant see how the pump could fail to cause low pressure?
or is there something else to check? starting to confuse me now

even thought the pump looks simple with hardly any parts could it fail, i spoke to the VW dealer who was suprised a pump could fail?
any help would be much appreciated,
