    Hi guys

Yesterday popped into main dealer to buy a couple of litres of Longlife oil. Was after the Castrol SLX Longlife III due to belieiving it to be the best stuff (for a 130 TDI PD engine)

Was told by parts man that 'Yes, we have it in stock but it's got a new label' It's called Castrol SLX Longtec and it reads:-

    Fully Synthetic Motor Oil. 0W - 30

    VW 502 00 / 503 01 / 505 00 mb229.3 / 229.5

Now I thought that it had to meet 506 00 and 506 01

I am assuming this is no good, can anyone else help???

There are several Castrol oils with confusingly similar names now.
Checkout the Castrol website and use the product selector to get the right one.

    OK

According to the castrol site it's CASTROL EDGE 5W-30, Replaces Castrol Formula SLX LongLife II, VW 504 00/507 00

Just to confuse me further my manual says it must be either 506 00 or 506 01 for longlife.

No wonder some garages are clueless when it comes to oil, just when I thought I knew what was what I get all confused again!

Does anyont think this Castrol is in fact correct?

It's not good, so many people in the trade giving out duff info.

I spoke to a mate last night that works in a dealer, he said that now they are starting to see more PD engines with really high milages in they are getting some really noisey ones with badly worn cam shafts. He said they often they have non main dealer history. However it seems main dealers are not beyond putting the wrong oil in the PD engines as well!

Be thankful you're not in the US where the dealerships constantly filled the 1.8T engines with the wrong oil for years leading to sludging problems galore

Considering selling my VCDS KEY-USB interface. If you're interested please contact me via PM or email.

I Just spoke to Castrol technical who say that because my car is an Audi and not a VW then Castrol Edge 5w 30 (504 00 / 507 00) is the right stuff. He also said they gets loads of calls every day about this. The first thing he said to me was 'dont tell me, yuo drive a VW'

So can anyone confirm that this is correct?

    The DPF is the decider.
If you have a PD with DPF you must use 507.
If you have a PD without DPF then use 505.01/506.01 for timed or long life respectively.

My Local Audi Garage says it uses SLX Long life 3 for everything. Thats 504 00 and 507 00.

Pardon my ignorance but whats a DPF??? and how do I know if my car has one. It's a 2003 TDI 1.9 PD.

    diesel particulate filter
    You don't have one on a 2003.
I am sure 507 is ok, it superseded 505 and 506 for most applications
