Just tried to sell our much loved Passat on ebay, but didn't quite reach it's reserve. Too add insult to injury the clutch is starting to slip Now I'm aware the clutch uses a duel mass flywheel set up, but I'm told if this is at fault the car is noisy at start up and tick over and this is not the case with ours. Should I arrange to change the clutch without the duel mass and save myself a wedge or what please advise. I'm sure the duel mass was made to outlast the clutch!

It's alot cheaper to fit a solid flywheel/clutch kit. Lots of people have done it, especially taxi drivers.

Any more detail on this-is this a straight replacement-pros/cons-cost?
I would really be interested to know more about this in view of the value of our B5.5 compared to the cost of a DMF clutch change.

    Many thanks,
    Mike

The repair time/cost is the same either way. The solid flywheel/clutch kit is less than half the price and if you keep the car, in the future you will only need a clutch.

Surely the DMF is fitted for a reason and absorbs engine vibrations and damps them through the transmission?

Sorry didn't explain properly i know the DMF has to be in place to do its job and shouldn't be removed. What I meant was, a number of garages have strongly recommended changing the DMF no matter what when you have clutch problems. But another guy i spoke to, who has loads of expirence as a BMW technician and now runs his own successful garage has said its only critical to change the DMF when its noisy on start up and when idling, because its worn. The rest of the clutch can be to blame and not the DMF. Some garages baiscally don't want to do the clutch job unless the DMF is included. So who has changed their clutch when its slipping, without changing the DMF and had no problems?

One of the local part suppliers do a DMF tester hire, which sound like a good idea to me. I going to check it out. seems silly to change for no reason and expensive

No garage is going to want to replace a clutch and not replace the DMF. It's not worth the agro when the DMF fails. Most of the cost of this work is labour so if you gamble on not changing the DMF you could end up doing the job twice !!!!
Why not chuck the DMF away and fit a proper flywheel/clutch conversion for half the price.

I do feel this is just a cop out the tester idea seems good one, the flywheel for my 2.0 GT TDI is £225 Luk or if its the Sachs unit its £445. then £185 for the clutch that's allot of money and they don't make a solid one yet

To be honest if your selling the car do what yo think is correct, it may be best to sell as is and if it slips then reduce the value.
