Im just wondering if anyone could possibly point me in the right direction.

Symptoms are engine revs pulse/surge up and down randomly at idle (like someone is pumping the accelerator) normally when first started, fuel consumption has gone up. The guy at the garage said it may be the MAF sensor but didn't want to take his word for it as he seemed a bit shifty.

I have a fault code from the shareware version of vag-com I will try to post when I get home.... Anyone?....

Your car is a 2001 A3 with an AVU 101PS engine and manual box for those that would like to know.

16556 Fuel metering system too rich” which is there twice for some reason but it is the free shareware version so no complaints there.

I suggest you fit a new genuine Audi dealer supplied Air Mass Meter, DO NOT buy one anywhere else, not matter how good it seems or how cheap it is.

Thankyou for taking the time to reply!

I've read on many sites that you can clean the MAF sensor, should I try this or just cut my losses and buy a new one?

Cleaning the AMM is very hit and miss, the best way is to buy a new one. When we have issues like this in the workshop the cheapest way to diagnose an AMM is to fit a new one and if that fails to cure the problem, it is no big deal as they don’t cost very much, less than an hours labour at Audi.
