  1. Question Passat B5 Rear Speakers
    #1
    DAVE NIC Guest
    Hi all.

This is my first thread so here goes.

My 2002 130 TDi Passat Sport Estate has the VW factory fitted in-dash 6 cd changer/radio cassette unit fitted. Just discovered there is no sound coming from the rear near side speakers when I put fader full to rear & balance full to near side with volume up ie. neither the tweeter or main speaker works. All the other speakers are fine though when I adjust fader/balance back to centre.

Do you think this could be a loose wiring connection in the door or a blown speaker problem - seems strange no sound from both so suspect a possible loose connector problem - hopefully not a head unit problem.

Any advice how to fix would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

The connection near the door hinge can fail. You may be able to unplug and touch wires from a 9v batter onto the speaker wires and see if you hear the speaker pop when you connect and disconnect. At least this will show the speaker and wire to the door inner jamb is OK. Sorry I don't know which wire is which, some will be for windows and locking I presume.

Should be red/green and brown/green wires going from B-Post to door. There is a connector there somewhere. That is likely to be the problem.

    Hi.

Thanks very much for your advice. I will have a look this weekend at the connection at the door hinge.

    Regards.

    Hi.

Thanks very much for the advice on the wiring colour coding. Hopingto check it out this weekend. Hopefully if I can fix should make a big difference to the sound quality in the back.

    Regards.

Hi.checked the connector but all seems to be ok there - no broken wires or corrosion I could see. Disconnected & reconnected it but no joy. Didn't manage to test the speakers so I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do now. I did try to start taking the door card off to try & get to the speakers but although I got it partly off it seemed reluctant to come off fully & I didn't want to break it so stopped. Possible clips inside the interior door handle hold it to the inside metal door frame ? Any further ideas anyone ? Thanks.

I would try pulling off the door connector and connecting to a spare speaker. If that don't work you know the fault is either the player or the wires from the player. Saves taking door apart.

Hi. Thanks again for the additional advice. I will try & get hold off an old speaker from a scrapyard & give it a go as you suggest - makes a lot of sense instead of pulling the door to bits at this stage.

    Regards.

You could get a new speaker from Maplins if there is one near you..
