Service parts question for a '99 GTi Turbo

Hi Guys,

I'm going to do an oil and filter change on my '99 GTi Turbo and was wondering:

a.) which oil to use? I've seen lots of threads on this subject for diesels but couldn't find one for petrols. GSF recommended a fully synthetic Titan XTR 5w 40 but someone I know recommended a fully synthetic Mobil 0w 40. What does everyone think?

b.) I'm also changing the air filter. GSF don't have the VW part but they do have an equivalent. Would this be ok?

I use Synta Gold in those but that has been superseded to Synta Platinum which I think is a 5w/40 as Gold was or you could use Quantum Longlife 5w/30.

Try goin to VW they are a tiny bit more expensive but only abit, they gave me a 5ltr 10w 40 for mine cost me £30 for oil, oil filter and new sump plug + £15 for new air filter. Good price for all genuine bits.
