Coolant Temperature Sensor Location

Anyone know where the coolant temperature sensor is on a 2002 A3 (130) tdi? Its an ASZ engine code.

Temperature guage erratic so this is the first port of call.

In a plastic water housing on the back of the head with the sensor facing to the right.

found the sensor - its on the passengers side of the engine just to the left of the air filter housing (imagine your're standing in front of the car looking down into the engine). its an air under a pipe

Do you mean here? The side of the car does not change as you look at it; the left is always the left and the right always the right so this is the back of the engine facing towards the right hand inner wing.
