  1. Question What engine oil to use in a Golf Mk5 GTI (2008) ???

    Dear members,

I have searched high and low and cant seem to find a 'proper' answer. I have a 58 plate new golf mk5 gti and just approaching 5k on clock when oil light came on and it needed topping up as was on low level marker. I have searched the net and find that VW and AUDI cars have Castrol Edge 5w-30 engine oil as the recommended oil.

Various threads and forums talk about different oils and quality.

Is there someone out there who can give me a definite answer as to,

    a) is the castrol edge 5w-30 oil the right oil for my gti mk5 (58 plate) or
    b) what oil SHOULD i be using.

PS another question that keeps coming up in the forums is folk doing oil and filter changes at 5k miles ! is this necessary and does it help etc or is it a waste of cash as my 1st service will be due around 10k miles.

    Regards in advance, shaft-50

Quantum Longlife 3, I do not like the Longlife intervals though so the 10k ish intervals are OK.

quantum is the stuff which VW/Audi will use... if you went into your local dealer trade counter this is what they will supply for you..

Take a look at our supporting companies.. with have a oil supplier onbaord who will offer you a deal

Thanks guys. Visited my local VW garage (HX VW) and they have told me that as my car is on the time dependant service (as and when car needs it) I will need the 10w-40 oil (they sell the quantum brand) however currently car has long life set up of 5w-30 oil up until the first service when they will change the oils for the right one.

So it is settled if you are long life service then its 5w-30 and if not then 10w-40 !!

5w/40 (such as Quantum Platinum) is also a suitable grade for fixed interval servicing but I use 5w/30 Longlife 3 on fixed interval in my car.
