Have an 02 plate Passat 1.9TDi and the wife has noticed that when she fills the screenwash up it disappears within a day. Also, hoovering the car out last week we noticed that the nearside rear passenger footwell was swimming in about an inch of water! Any ideas on how this can be and is it linked to the screenwash problem? Can't see why water would end up there though

You have two seperate issues there.

The windscreen washer bottle is situated in the front l/h wheel arch and to get to it you will need to take out the inner wing plastic liner.
Its possible that a pipe may have become disconnected or there is a split in the washer bottle itself.

The water in the car could be coming from a damaged seal on the pollen filter which in turn could be filling up from a blocked bung in the plenum chamber which leads to a list of other possible problems.

Do have a search of the threads mentioned by snapdragon as the water in the car is a common problem that can potentially have very expensive results i'm afraid.
If it ain't broke leave it alone!!!
