This is my first thread so fingers crossed , I have just fitted the westafalia plug in towbar to my 2008 170psi estate sport. I am now running the cables and have a few questions that I was hoping that somebody could advise on please
    1) I need to locate and connect into the network control unit , the instructions show it on the nearside front of the car and talk about a red latch on the unit to open it , but at the moment cannot find a unit with a red latch, any idea where it is located ?

    2) I need to run a cable for the caravan charge and fridge from the passenger compartment into the engine bay , is there an available cable route into the engine bay or do I need to drill a hole?

3)Once in the engine bay I need to connect to an ignition source within the engine compartment for the charging relay, is there an easy connection point for this cable ?

If anybody out there has already installed the westfalia wiring would appreciate some help advise please

    Thanks Keith

    1. Behind left hand trim in luggage area.
    2. What plug have you got. There are two connectors 12 pin and 16 pin.

    Martin,

The wiring kit is westfalia 13 pin , the towbar control unit came with the kit and as you say is located ( which I have done) behind the left hand trim in the boot.

There are three cables to connect:

    1) From the towbar control unit to the towbar socket ( no issues easy )

    2) From the Towbar control unit to the cars network control unit which the Westfalia instruction says is located left hand front of car and has a red latch on top to open ( at the moment cannot find this unit)

    3) A cable from the 13 pin socket cable loom in the boot area to the engine compartment for the split charge relay- this is where i wondered if there is a pre drilled hole I can get into the engine compartmenbt with and I then need to pick up an ignition supply to switch the relay

2: The red catch you are looking for is in the fuse box mounted in the end of the dash board. With the passenger door open remove the fuse box cover then remove the fuse box and remove the rear cover there is then a catch you have to slide in ordrer to insert the wires into the fuse box then insert the fuses, hopefully all will become clear when you see the rear of your fuse box

Thanks everybody for the input so far, things have gone from bad to worse this morning, I have looked in both the fusebox at the left hand side of the dash and the fusebox on the right hand end , I have had both apart and checked for free connections as in the westfalia instructions on fuses 6,29,28,30 and 38. and have found that in the main most of the terminals are already in use.

Have placed a halt on the work at this stage and will need to speak to westfalia next week

    Thanks

The on-board power control unit is in the driver footwell under the dash next to a relay panel. I presume they mean that one. Have you considered running your power supply from the rear cigarette lighter or rear power socket. These are ignition fed and fused. (20 amp).
Yes you can get into the engine bay via existing gromets, best seen from the engine bay, but you have to pull back the carpets abit in the passenger footwell. The fuse spots available to you in the fuse boxes depend on what options your car has. If you decide to run an ignition powered, fused feed I can tell you which fuse, but you will need to tell me which fuses are currently in use. VW revised some of the electrics during 08 which doesn't help.

Martin, thanks again , I have found the control unit as you say above the drivers footwell , I have also found that the confusion has been caused in part by having had the incorrect wiring kit and instructions delivered from the supplier, they sent the kit for the left hand drive vehicle where the control unit is located on the left hand side of the car.

The wiring in this kit does not appear to be long enough to reach the offside so I will need to speak to the suppliers on Monday and hopefully get the correct wiring loom sent down.

If all goes to plan will be back on track from the middle of next week and continue from that point, hopefully without to many further problems , as you say the wiring in the fusebox is also different from the instructions with the kit , I will also discuss this with the supplier.

Again thanks for your help very much appreciated , If I get stuck again will continue the thread sometime next week.

    Keith
