right i had the folowing problems and wanted to share the way i fixed them.

temp gauge would not work no matter how hot the car got, fixed by replacing the temp sensor, original was a square blue 4 pin switch, replacement was square green 4 pin switch from gsf £14 plus 70p for a new washer, i reused the horse shoe clip but be careful as it does fly off and fall where the eye cant see LOL. result, temp gauge works and better mpg, as the 4 pin switch uses 2 pins to feed the gauge and other 2 tell scu what temp car is running, before it was telling it the car is always running cold. now its sorted.

water leak, initally looked like it comming from the pipe from the water pump to the oil coller but in fact it was the top water flange the plastic part that holds the temp sensor, this was £10 from audi dealer although i later found out gsf do it for £6, on mines the rubber seal which sits between the flange and engine had cracked and was causing the leak. this is sorted now, no more leaks, had to refill system with g12 anti freeze 50/50 ratio, 1.5 litre concentrate from gsf £6.71.

deisel leak was from the deisel return pipes which sit just under the plastic engine cover on top of the rocker cover, these rubbe pipes persh after time, had them all replaced by local garage £15 parts and labour, no more leaks now.

ok what went wrong, i over tightened the nuts on the plastic engine cover which twisted the rubber off the mounts, making both mounts useless, got replacement mounts from dealer £5 each.

now the car runs really nicely and much more smooth it is giving me more mpg but i'm still to calculate an exact figure.

my car is an 1998 S reg, audi a6 1.9tdi manual 102k, gona hav the oil and filter changed its been 6k miles since it was done, original oil filter from euro car parts £6.71 audi quoted £15 LOL

5 litres of 10/40 semi synt deisel oil from audi £23, apart from the above work, i had the timing belt and kit replaced, water pump thermosat and other belts, hopefull the cars good for another 150k before i decide its time for a change. very happy with it at the mo, and hope this helps someone whos had similar problems.

    Won't be PD Peter, it's a 98 model.

    Probably a VE engine.

I've just put Shell Helix Diesel 10W-40 in my VE engined Octavia, cost about £15 for 5 litres.
