I need to replace my instrument cluster. If I do this myself will I have to recode my keys?

Is it possible for me to recode the keys? If it is,. how?

Depending on the year, if you have the instrument SKC (4 digit immo pin/s), and possibly new transponder chips for each key (roughly 2000 onwards)
you can do it with vagcom.

If you are only going to do this proceedure once, it can be more economical to get an auto-locksmith or the dealer to do it for you.

As far as I know the cluster needs coding, and the keys need coding. If you don't code the cluster you could end up with an immobilised car.

I wish someone could tell me how they obtain the SKC from the old dash insert. From what i understand,it is not possible. The only way to be able to code the keys with vagcom is if you have the 4 digit pin code which was on the scratch off tag, delivered with vehicles, prior to 2000 models.

Thanks for the replys. My problem is this, my instrument cluster is fu**ed and I have the opportunity to buy a new one. I also have vag software and the computer lead. If I buy the new cluster, is it possible to recode it or the keys?

I am prepared to make this work, I live in Ireland and was quoted €1,000 by audi dealership to replace the instrument clusted. I ain't paying that!

You can code the dash insert, but without the SKC,you can not code the keys. You don't mention which year the vehicle is,however,on later models, the dash insert is ordered, from the VIN,which means, that, just any insert, is not compatible with the vehicle.

There is software available that pulls the SKC code but it is illegal and discussions about it on here are not permitted for that reason.

Without the SKC code you can't do it, it has to go to the dealers and unfortunately there is no other way round it.
