    Hi there,

I have Rolf, a 1.6 CL, 1988 F reg, 166,000 miles. He developed the following faults... dying for no reason like a stall at ANY given speed, losing power gradually but starting fine immediately after dying, juddering like I'd used "kangaroo petrol" and bucking (ALL of these faults were intermittent, but frequent), misfiring etc etc. Then he would run on, and the revs would be too high, then he would be idling too slow and stalling. You get the idea.

Changed the plugs, HT leads, dizzy and rotor, took the little bugger for a diagnostic check and "bloody good tune up" with the local whizz kid (highly recommended). Rolf was fine all the way home. Then went back to his old ways. The diagnostic had recommended that we get a new carburettor as the 2e2 we had was a cheap £20 scrapyard jobbie that we chucked on when this fault first started. We got a pristine 2e2 (yes yes I know Webber Webber Webber but this was a few weeks before my MOT) and fitted it and Rolf was fine. Then went back to his old ways the next day. My Dad thinks we may possibly have put the hoses on in the wrong order / place (the 2e2 that we got this time was slightly different to the one we took off...)
    .
SO, what I was wondering as a last ditch attempt (Rolf passed his MOT on Monday, drove to the testing centre and back fine, 30 miles total) before I begrudgingly sell the unreliable beast IS, do any of you that have a Pierburg 2e2 set up nicely, have a photo or something that shows all the hose links? I have scoured the net and can't find any. I would really appreciate this as I adored my last Golf and loved Rolf until he started being a bumhole. I just want him to be reliable again!

    Thanks in advance,
    Lol.

also i forgot to tell you to check the cold air flap in the end of the air cleaner to see if it opens and closes as this will cause the carb to ice in cold weather car will cough and splutter at constant speeds and will come to a halt bat will start within secs only to do this again and again

Wow, that would be amazing towcestervag - I have taken photos of Rolf today ready to sell him on eBay if my last ditch attempt to fix him doesn't work but I hope it doesn't come to that! email it to scriggy@gmail.com . I'll also check the cold air flap tomorrow morning - too dark now!
    Thanks again for your help.

Right. Firstly, I want to say thanks for the help re: the Carb. Turns out it was wired in fine, just lots of other stuff is up with my golf! 'Cos it had been running rich the sparks are ruined so i need new ones, the leads don't fit properly so I need new ones of them and they've ruined my dis cap so I need a new one of them, this is all fine, but apparently I also need to replace the diaphragm on the brace of the carb and need a new pulldown on the carb. I was quoted over £250 for this so my golf will be appearing on eBay soon!

Thank you ever so much for the diagrams you scanned in though, and thanks for your input!
