I finally got around to getting another golf. But i managed to lose the key today, i only had one. Now thecar is parked on yellow lines and i cant move it. Ive managed to get in to it but how do i go about getting a new key as cheap as possible, as the steering lock is on i cant move it anywhere.
Can i take the barrel to a locksmiths and get them to make a key? is it possible? then obviously im gonna have to get a new chip and get it reprgrammed. thanks

I'd contact your local locksmiths for advice until you find one who works on car locks and remote fobs/immobilisers. I got a new key fob on ebay and sorted out the key cutting and programming that way. Look for posts on remote keys, fobs, immobilisers. Come back if you can't find what you're looking for.

take your docs to dealership they could cut you a key to get your car moved but i think they'll have to re-program the new key to start engine and they'll need the car to do that

The main thing is just getting the steering lock off so i can move it or tow it. Do you reckon there are any locksmiths that can make the key for me if i take the ignition barrel or even a door barrel out and give it to them?

Locksmith copied an existing key for me; I don't know if they can take the numbers from your documentation and cut a key but it's worth asking if you have the information. I doubt if they can cut a key by using a lock as a profile but it's also worth asking. VW quote approx £150.00 to do a new key and should be able to do it from your car's VIN number or reg. number. Either way, once you have a key that fits the locks, it'll need programming to the immobiliser and central lockin.

getting the key cut won't be a prob for a decent vehicle lock smith [if you produce door lock] your key depending on the year of car will have a transponder chip in it thays why you're better going to dealers , last i heard it was approx £70 - £90, by the way how can you get ignition barrel out without the key??

From the look of the machining marks on the spare key cut for me, it was done with a vertical milling machine type of setup.
