    Hi Guys,

I have a golf mk2 GTi 16v with a 2L bottom end (6a/9a). Just recently the head seems to rattle at about 1800revs, anything lower or higher in the rev range there is no rattle but at about 1800 there is a noticeable rattle. It like a metallic rattle. Its noticeable when driving and more noticeable when the bonnet is open. I am am quite sure it is coming from the head. Do you you know what this could be, and could it be serious. I only had the engine put in a few months back, and everything was rebuilt, even the head. Could it be the chain, but this has been replaced when the head was totally rebuilt.

    Cheers.

I had a new chain when the top end was totally rebuilt. The rattling noise only occurs at about 1800. If i drive along and keep the revs at about 1800, then the noise is continous, if id rop in revs or go any higher there is no noise at all. Is this serious then?

    Cheers

Were the exhaust valve guides replaced?

They only thing to do is remove the inlet manifold and cam cover to see if there is any slack in the chain.

Ok, cheers for that, if there is slack in the chain is this a problem and should it be dealt with as soon as possible. I just dont want the people in the garage to say it doesnt matter and all 16vs are like that. cheers mate

A new chain should have virtually no slack, as they age they stretch and slap around.
