I agree with Spudrig about the engine, it's not the best and I found it easy to stall when I first got mine.
and when you have autohold engaged the handbrake comes on automaticly if stalled great when your moving in traffic someone is behind you

Definitely get the cambelt, water pump and tensioner changed as soon as possible. Try and get it done at a VW dealer, as they give you a 2 year guarantee on the work done. Phone around some dealers to get the cheapest quote.

As for the engine being rattly, I really don't mind the noise. I love the gruff rumble of it when it is accelerating

Thank you chaps for all the free valuable advice, you’ve given me. You’ve certainly decreased me stress levels. This is my first car I’ve spent any decent money on so is quite an investment.

So I’m going to start ringing some dealers and independent VW specialist’s to find out how much its going to cost for CAMBELT and may as well get it serviced at same time.

I will heed your advice and get tensioner, idler and water pump done at same time.

I’ve seen 2 local independent VW garages in local area mentioned on the forums so going to give them a ring.

    Thanks once again.

k2jamrock. You can go into any vw dealer and ask nicely for a service print out for your car. Any work done at a dealership is stored on a central database which can be printed out. If you have a service done at a dealer I am sure they will give you a printout for nothing.

My car till just before Christmas was a VW Touran with the 2.0TDI engine, it was coming up for a cambelt change so I did a bit of research before I changed cars.

On the ClubTouran.net website quite a few people have used a independant VAG specialist near Cannock Staffs. They were very highly rated and charge sensible prices and provide loan cars. Just checked and to change the cambelt, tensioner and the waterpump cost £300 inc VAT

The're called Midlands VW. I'm sure if you're local you'd be able to find their location etc, they were not far off the A34 as I remember

Odd thing is that my local VW dealer quoted me £250 for a Cambelt - which didn't (oddly enough) include the water pump which seemed a bit of a swizz to me...

I'm about due and going to have to ring around - I wonder if it'd be cheaper if I got the service done at the same time...

    Hi Chaps,
    Just another update,

I got prices for Service (Yearly One) Not Long life and Cambelt Kit Change including WaterPump.

2 Garages and 1 Dealer they were as follows.

    http://www.vagspares.com/ quoted price £380.00
    http://www.vwrescue.co.uk/service.php quoted price £ 621.48 << to the pence

finally Stourbridge VW Dealer quoted £477.00
But whats funny is that he asked if I had got any other quotes.
So I told him truth and said I'd been quoted by VAG Garage that they would do it for £380. He said they would "Price Match", I was shocked could'nt belive.. So I bit his fingers off and accepted. Got the 2 years guarantee on the work too; which I read about.

    I love this site..

Thats a good deal k2jamrock. Now you can be safe in the knowledge that you won't have any issues with the cambelt!
