Hi, Have just recently purchased my first VW, 06 Plate. it has done 69k on the clock. Serviced every 20k miles has had the fuel pump replaced.

From what I can tell the car from the interior looks like its not been treated Gently. I've only had it a couple of days, and not having a VW before the engine sounds noisy. Whens its idling its okay, but when I rev the engine it does make fair noise. I checked the engine oil and its well black. Not having a Passatt before I can't compare.

Its got 12 months M.O.T but that do'nt mean much about the engine condition. I've also noticed its sluggish in lower gears; i've driven 08 VW Polo and that was wicked in lower gears. So was disappointed with the pick up spead of this Passat.

Also i'm missing the owners handbook for the vehicle. So could someone please tell me does this car have a CAMBelt or is it Chain; i've no idea.

It also has only spare key missing asked VW Main dealer and they charging £160 plus £50 for the owners handbook. Ouch.

Any help much appreciated. And if theirs a good VW garage you could recommend to me; i'd be grateful.

    Thank you.

I have a 1.9TDi 105 S model too. The engine is the old 1.9 unit that has been around for ages (early 90's), and although its been updated since then, it is a very rattly and unrefined engine.

As for the oil being black, this is normal for a TDi engine. It will go black within a few miles of the oil change.

About the sluggishness in lower gears, I'm not too sure. Mine is brisk through the gears, although you have to keep the revs above 1700 rpm or so to keep the turbo wound up.

The Passat has a cambelt, and it is advised to be changed at 60k miles. I think the handbook says 80k, but better to be safe than sorry.

Finally, as for the garage, I can only recommend my dealer here in Northern Ireland, but many people on here will be able to recommend which dealers to go to and which ones to avoid.

    Hope this helps!

The handbook is located within a pull down compartment within the glovebox

Thank you Spudrig, for the info.
I'll check the rpm next time i'm driving to see if I'm not giving it enough gas.
I don't know why I thought it was a Chain system. Doh If I knew before I could have knocked him on the price; unfortunately i'm not very good when it comes to salesmen

    With regards to Lemonslap
The chap at dealership checked glovebox not in their. He did however give me a print out from Arnold Clark Vehicle Management

I Bought vehicle from Willenhall in the West Midlands. A Fair distance away. Anyone know approx how much i'm looking at to get the CamBelt replaced and I reckon if I get that done I may as well get service at the same time.

Just some more info car plate begins with AK06, so I presume thats Arnold Clark. It cost me £5,670 not sure now if thats a good deal... Judging by the wear and tear on the vehicle. And reading up on this forum it seems very easy to change vehicle mileage...

if the service record adds up with the dates then it will properly be fine mate was it a VW dealer? Or independent?

Bought from independent dealer, got 12 Months M.O.T on it. My concern now is the cambelt.. more than the engine noise

Would the diagnostic system VAGCOM tell you if CAMBELT needs replacing or if any issues with Engine ?

The cambelt's a wear/tear item so there'll be no notification to do it - If it's not been done at this mileage, do it. (Note to self - do cambelt).

If it's been serviced every 20k, it sounds like it's been on long life servicing (not my ideal choice as that means an oil change every 20k).

VAGCOM might tell you if there's any issues, but you might be able to take it to a dealer/indy and they might be able to give it the once over (for a fee).

My advice? Find an independant VW specialist and put their number in your mobile.

K2Jamrock £5670 for an 06 with 70K is a very good price. Try dealer for cambelt change price and then try a local specialst. Make sure you get quote for belt, tensioner, idler and waterpump all in one go. Don't let anyone do the job cheap by not replacing everything. If the waterpump goes it takes the belt with it and that wrecks the engine.

That does sound a very good price.

I agree with Spudrig about the engine, it's not the best and I found it easy to stall when I first got mine.
