I'd suggest first of all getting a manual, even a Haynes, that will give a step by step guide.

The hardest part of doing this is splitting the hub where it clamps round the base of the strut. VW have a special tool but a large cold chisel and lump hammer will do the trick although a bit brutal.

Before you start dismantling under the wheelarch though, make sure you have the proper tools for undoing the top nut in the engine bay. A sparkplug socket and allen key are probably the best combo. Otherwise you will need a deeply offset ring spanner and allen key to get down on the nut.

Thanks for the advice....iv found a couple of articles the net of previous attempts at this from others guys....theyre pretty detailed and theyl do the trick. Iv also got hold of an imperial swan neck spanner that fits the strut top nut perfectly so with this and the allan key, il get the leg off.

    Cheers for the help

Job done. Nice and easy. Even managed it without spring compressors.
