    Hi All.
my 2005 A3, seems to have dropped MPG quite a lot recently. I was wondering what should we be expecting from this car as an average MPG on A / B road runs (School runs) approx 5 miles each way..
    Any inputs would be welcome.

Has it dropped due to the cold (winter) weather?

May have done but it does seem a large drop to me. This is why I would like to hear other folks MPG figures for this engine..

Tivo, your tfsi / tsi 2.0 engine: to save much time, your engine - is it original rubber toothed belt cam drive OR 2nd gen chain cam drive

you should have 1st gen w/rubber toothed cam belt

1st gen direct injection engine used 3-lobe accessory cam on end of cam shaft to drive hitachi high pressure petrol injection pump - pump piston follower is plain sliding surface bearing on 3-lobe cam

2nd gen direct injection engine (current production design) uses 4-lobe accessory cam on cam shaft to drive revised hitachi high pressure petrol injection pump - pump piston follower is revised roller design on 4-lobe cam

as you probably have 1st gen engine, I would talk with an audi service center re: wear of 3-lobe hp pump cam lobes/tips - pump drive cam NOT valve camshaft lobes

this ONLY refers to rubber toothed belt cam drive models NOT 2nd gen chain drive cam engines

if 3-lobe cam is wearing down, fuel mileage will be reduced as engine ecu demand for fuel will exceed map values, as pump is delivering less petrol with each pump stroke...

diesels NOT involved -- 2nd gen chain drive cam (petrol) NOT involved

this condition must deteriorate abit for print-out to graph reduced fuel delivery (actual) vs. fuel delivery (requested) - ie: cam lobe/tip wear must be measureable / tip flattened...

this is only FYI & a recognized service issue with small numbers of 1st gen engine (4-valve / direct petrol injection)

approach service writer / service manager is reasonable manner and ask for high pressure pump cam wear evaluation...

    Wow..
That was like an education for me... Just to advise the reg date of the vehicle is 26/05/05, not sure if this helps to determine if 1st gen or 2nd gen.
    Thanks for the detailed information.

I did contact local Audi garage who advised i reset all trips and measure over this coming week to determine MPG in better weather conditions. We have done this and so far the MPG is about 24 to the gallon.. so no real improvment yet.

If anyone has this engine, can you advise approx mpg you are getting on a run around town, a / b roads mostly.
