i want a bit more bite with the front brakes, fluid is fine, overall condition is good and they have a small lip and a score or two on one disc, just had rears done with standard discs and pads, have used rossini discs and green stuff pads before on a previous car, i rate the pads, the discs were ok although were rusty overnight due to metal not being a high spec.

what has anyone on here fitted to their vag cars and what would people recommend, i have until may time to get a set ready for mot time, what prices are people paying for standard vs uprated

I fitted delphi high performence disks to my mark 4 golf, and they're quite decent, good bite and dont rust overnight to quickly.

Wouldnt no much about prices because i dont pay normal prices as i can get them at trade rates through friends garage.

Unless you are into track days, personally i dont see the point in fitting uprated brakes.
You may feel that you stop quicker and better but this means you'll probably drive faster and brake later. Also it means telling your insurance company which more than likley will increase your insurance.
On my anniversary golf ive fitted standard brakes and pads and dont have any problems !

And what brakes are on your anni, would they be the uprated 312mm fitted by VW. Your brakes are usually the ones people use to uprate their standard Golf brakes.

    tosh (IMHO)

insurance will not bother about you uprating brakes, if they bothered that much about the pads fitted, they'd want to inspect them every time you changed them. I suppose the same goes for brand of tyre too?

I uprated the golfs to EBC's greenstuff and they came in handy on more than a few emergency stops. fitting more efficient brakes does not necessarily mean the car will be driven more aggressively.

Of course your insurance company will, if you have declared that you have uprated your brakes from standard they class this as a modifcation !
Brand of tyre is not a modification unless they are bigger than what was fitted as standard ie if you've fitted bigger wheels !

EBC Greenstuff pads all round and Brembo Max discs up front.

Insurance company were told and it was all included in the modified plan I have.

Stopping is much much better than before and they've helped me out a few times - highly recommended.

It's an insurance minefield! I once upgraded the brakes on my Rover 827i, bigger discs and pads. However, because they were standard fit on another model in the range and were Rover parts the insurance company didn't care. If you use after market parts they probably will.

Tyres are also odd. The insurance company cares about the size, load rating, speed rating etc but doesn't care if you fit poor performing budget tyres rather than say Pirelli or Michelin. A bit odd really!

Brake pads. What is a standard fit? It is quite possible Audi have not used the same supplier consistently through a particular models life so who knows what the standard is?

If in doubt inform your insurance company I think is the rule to abide by.

How many of you informed your insurance company about remaps? What is it about secret software that makes us feel more secire than with hardware and is it really that secret?

A couple of years ago I put KAD vented and grooved Discs and uprated pads on my classic Mini I rang the insurance to inform them they said thanks for letting us know it doesn't make any difference to you premium.

A couple of times I've been glad of them when idiots in bigger cars have thought oh it's only an old mini I'll pull out

i see brakes as something that will make you safer, cant imagine an insurance company would give two hoots wether you want to be safer, they care if your car is more desirable to a thief or if it is quicker, my requote for my insurance is 8 quid more because of my car being chipped, i asked them to produce quote for standard and quote for modified.

i often have 4 or 5 adults in the car and having a good set up front that wont fade would be nice if i was traversing the welsh moutains. not that they have faded, but now its time to think about gettin good brakes as i think they'll last 4 ish years and by that time i'll have sold the car i reckon.

green stuff pads are a definate.

    discs, unsure
