A6 Winter Tyres and Alloys

The recent snow has highlighted a lack of traction with my A6 2.0 TDi Avant Limited Edition Multitronic.

I'm considering getting hold of a secondhand set of wheels and putting on snow/winter tyres.

Any advice?

The standard wheels are 8Jx18 12 spoke items but could I trade down to say 17" or even 16" wheels for the winter set? Would a set of VW rims fit just as well?

You don't want to go to small in terms of wheels... otherwise the brake discs might not fit in the wheels!

Yes VW rims would fit too, you need to make sure the wheels you buy have a PCD of 5x112.
